I'm wondering if there's a custom loot rule for keeping non-ancient legendaries like the puzzle ring? (that opens the portal to the goblin's treasure vault).

Yes there is. You can choose "High" as the stash filter in Settings > Loot, then you can "Modify stash rules" and choose the items you want.
